Electronic toll collection (ETC)

ETC, or Electronic Toll Collection System, is a system which allows drivers to automatically pay tolls on toll roads without stopping the car. Some entrances and exits on Japanese expressways are ETC-only and cash/credit card is not accepted.

ETC cards are technically credit cards, and most of the public applies for the card through their local bank. SOFA personnel without a Japanese national spouse will not have this option right away. Instead, many use a local service that caters to SOFA personnel. Contact your sponsor or the Camp Fuji Public Affairs Specialist for more information.
