Information about transportation options around Camp Fuji

Combined Arms Training Center, Camp Fuji

No. Vehicles are not allowed to be brought into Japan.

Service members may be eligible to store a vehicle during their CATC Camp Fuji assignment.

Civilians are responsible for the storage of their personal vehicles, if they choose to do so.

Military: E-6 or above may own a vehicle and must have command approval. All vehicles must be registered with PMO and have Personal Damage Insurance and Japanese Compulsory Insurance. All vehicles must pass annual maintenance inspections before the owner can purchase insurance. An annual road tax must be paid to the GOJ and to drive a POV in Japan you must apply through the command for a license.

E-5 and below may be able to obtain approval to drive in Japan. Command approval is required. Contact your supervisor for more details.

Civilians: Civilians working at Camp Fuji must live off-base. Public transportation may not be a reasonable option, a personal vehicle (POV) and driver's license are essential. After you arrive, you will have an opportunity to attend safety training to learn about how driving in Japan is different than the states. You must pass a test before being issued a permit, allowing you to drive in Japan.

Local vehicles are often purchased through Facebook Marketplace, a neighboring installation lemon lot, or used car lots outside of bases catering to people associated with the military. Due to the size of Camp Fuji, we do not have our own lemon lot. Occasionally, a PCSing Camp Fuji member will be selling their vehicle around the time of your arrival.

Your sponsor may be able to offer you information about how you can purchase a vehicle.

MCCS offers rental vehicles. Including small motor homes for recreational purposes.

On-base Transportation

Electronic toll collection (ETC)

Electronic Toll Collection System, is a system which allows drivers to automatically pay tolls on toll roads without stopping the car. Some entrances and exits on Japanese expressways are ETC-only and cash/credit card is not accepted.

ETC cards are technically credit cards, and most of the public applies for the card through their local bank. SOFA personnel without a Japanese national spouse will not have this option right away. Instead, many use a local service that caters to SOFA personnel. Contact your sponsor for more information. Toll Calculator
